  25. I don't think so.  It's been my experience that all electronic 
  26. components last longer if they're never turned off.  It's that surge of 
  27. the on-switch that does the most damage.  And, with the advent of 
  28. screenblankers, that phosphor burn of the pic-tubes has been virtually 
  29. eliminated.

  31. Long as we're off topic, when I was a chemist, I worked in a huge lab up
  32. in Missouri, where we manufactured ammonia and nitric acid.  The diesel
  33. switch engine we used to pull the big tank cars around the yard was
  34. NEVER turned off.

  36. It had been purchased from the Frisco railroad company in 1961, for a
  37. dollar, and while I was working there, that would be '67-68, it was never
  38. turned off, and they claimed it had been running continuously since they
  39. bought it.  They didn't even shut it down to change the oil;  they just
  40. flushed out the old oil and ran in fresh with a recycling pump.

  42. When I stopped in for a visit in 1970, it was still running.
